Isaiah 17
1.This is the burden against Damascus: “Behold, Damascus is no longer a city; it has become a heap of ruins.
2The cities of Aroer are forsaken; they will be left to the flocks, which will lie down with no one to fear. ..(Today Aroer sits in Jordan there will be no men there to scare off the animals)
3The fortress will disappear from Ephraim, and the sovereignty from Damascus. The remnant of Aram will be like the splendor of the Israelites,” ..(Aram is best understood as a suburb of Damascus: Aram-Damascus is commonly referred to as simply Aram in the Old Testament)
In this chapter we are certainly speaking of a war/battle Where Damascus is brought to ruin And the Jordanian city of Aroer becomes unhabitual to humans.
(Aroer is no longer in existence but it sat on the southern end of the dead sea very close to todays Israeli border with Jordan)
I always was unsure exactly how we are to understand the first part of this 3rd verse
What's the meaning of The fortress will disappear from Ephraim?
I think I may have stumbled onto something here see what you all think: One of the most famous fortified cities in the Old testament was Jericho. In the time of Isaiah the city of Jericho sat in the land allotted to Ephraim.
Today modern Jericho is a Palestinian city in the West Bank; Jericho is the administrative seat of the Governorate of the State of Palestine.
Here we have the old fortress fortified city of Jericho in the land of Ephraim (current West Bank)and its the seat/fortress of the Palestinian government
So to pull this together these 3 verses are describing A war where Israel's enemies in Damascus Syria, Jordan Border with Israel and if Im right the Palestinian government center in city of Jericho in the West Bank destroyed ....
This could very well be on verge of happening if so ....
To speculate: if Hamas/Hezbollah are destroyed and the Iran backed Revolutionary Guard in Syria, and the Palestinian government in West Bank and the border land of Jordan becomes uninhabitable to men
Israel would finally feel safe being no longer surrounded. Their victory could be a reason to rebuild the Temple.
However its would be this very false sense of safety that will be the danger
