Albert Einstein’s theory of general relativity is packed with weird insights about our reality, but perhaps the most mind-boggling is the fact that strong gravitational fields or incredibly high speeds can warp the passage of time, an effect known as time dilation.

For instance, clocks located onboard spacecraft tick slightly faster than those on Earth, due to the distortive effects of our planet’s gravity on time. Now, in a major breakthrough, scientists at JILA, a joint operation between the National Institute of Standards and Technology and the University of Colorado Boulder, have measured time dilation at the smallest scale ever using the most accurate clocks in the world.

The team showed that clocks located just a millimeter apart—about the width of a pencil tip—showed slightly different times due to the influence of Earth’s gravity. The new experiment paves the way toward clocks with 50 times the precision of those available today, which could be used for a host of practical applications, while also shedding light on fundamental mysteries about our universe, including the long-sought “union of general relativity and quantum mechanics,” according to a study published on Wednesday in Nature.

When you go to such a small scale, what does that mean? It means that the clock precision is better,” said Jun Ye, a JILA physicist who co-authored the study, in a call. “In some sense, what we are trying to say is that time and space are interconnected.

As Einstein’s relativity told us, time is space, space is time, and time is relative. There’s no absolute concept of time.” Ye and his colleagues at JILA have been pushing the frontiers of timekeeping and general relativity for several years by designing ever-more accurate atomic clocks.

The role of the pendulum in these clocks is played by the shifting frequency of electrons in atoms that are carefully arrayed in lattices designed to control their chaotic energy and motion. These innovations distinguish atomic clocks as being by far the most accurate timekeepers ever devised, capable of losing just one second over 15 billion years, which is why they are used on Global Positioning Service (GPS) satellites and other systems that require hyper-precise time

I can write a large things about this fascinating topic, including a dream I had that I told once before but is worth repeating.

With a black hole, there are no dimensions, only the "event horizon" where the escape velocity is the speed of light that nothing can go faster. We often see a grid where a black hole acts as a speck sinking it down to describe space-time distortions that we can visualize. When something hits the event horizon, from our vantage point it freezes in time and is "stationary" forever. But that's not so. It's because of the dimensions. If you look DOWN at the grid,you can see an object move horizontally along it until it "falls off the cliff" where the black hole is so-to-speak. Thus it is now moving vertically down with no horizontal movement so from that frame it appears to freeze. Of course it's not actually going down in the third dimension but in another.

Now consider the speed of light. Time for the traveler slows down from our vantage point in the same manner. Why? Did you know that as you approach the speed of light, your mass also increases to a theoretical limit like a black hole.So in my own words you are creating your own event horizon. Space also contorts to a contraction in the direction of motion to you can see your backside in front of you! Sounds very similar to that drop-off in the grid.

Now for my dream: I was upset that my plant was closing down and I just took off flying toward the ceiling and through the roof. People screamed that I was flying into the sun! As I traveled a tremendous velocity toward the sun, I remembered veering off to the right and the sun passing behind me. I headed toward Orion and once in the vicinity I remembered circling around the constellation and noting the change in stellar positions as as my vantage point changed. Even in my dream I analyze things. I remember two things. I was amazed there was no red-shifting of light -- everything appeared normal and also I feared I could not find my way back home since I could not see the sun past 60 light years.

Once the dream was over, I got some insight as to why there is no red-shift, and it's possible albeit a need for a tremendous amount of energy. In a movie, 16 still pictures flip quickly in one second creating the illusion of movement. The answer was simple. I went into a wormhole, transversed our space, then re emerged at sub-light speed where things appear normal like a "frame in a movie", I then re emerged into a wormhole and emerged out further down at sublight, etc etc. While in the wormhole I would see nothing, and only saw the frames outside the wormhole in normal speeds in rapid succession. I dubbed this transport as "digital transport". The funny thing that happened is at the time I had the dream, I checked my star maps and found that Orion was right of the sun at that time of year. I was not overly conscious of that. Interesting.
